Transportation

Century West has provided transportation design and construction management to various clients since our company’s founding in 1969. Our experience with transportation projects includes corridor improvements, roundabouts, ADA-compliant sidewalk and curb ramps, bikeways, pedestrian trails, traffic calming devices, porous pavement design, and parking areas. We understand that transportation projects are primarily driven by multimodal safety and accessibility and keep these considerations top of mind during design.

City of Milwaukie, 43rd Avenue Safe Access for Everyone (SAFE) / Street Surface Maintenance Program (SSMP) Improvements

The 43rd Avenue SAFE/SSMP project revamped the corridor with bike and pedestrian facilities, ADA enhancements, stormwater management upgrades, and pavement improvements on 43rd Avenue and Howe Street, spanning King Road to 42nd Avenue, including sanitary sewer work between Rockwood and Covell Street. The project featured variable grind/overlay for consistent road profiles, a 10-foot-wide pervious asphalt shared-use path, installation of 20 new ADA-compliant curb ramps across 6 intersections, and stormwater system improvements with new drywells and a storm main, alongside waterline adjustments discovered during construction.

ODOT Region 4, US97: Nels Anderson Place to Romaine Village Way ADA

Century West provided ADA design services and bidding and construction support for the rehabilitation of US97 between Nels Anderson Place and Romaine Village Way. The project's scope included assessing and designing 67 deficient corner ramps and median cut-through islands. Following the assessment, Century West prepared design exceptions, construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates, designs for pedestrian signal upgrades, and plans for temporary pedestrian access routes. The ODOT Region 4 team had a hard deadline of August 31, 2020, for the plans, specifications, and cost estimates submittal. Century West worked diligently to meet the Advance Plans deadline and receive approval for the Design Exceptions to meet the deadline. The project was completed in the fall of 2021.

City of Bonners Ferry, Wilson Street to Solomon Road Corridor

Century West worked with the City of Bonners Ferry to develop concept alternatives for a multimodal roadway section to connect Wilson Street and Solomon Road. The project was identified in the City’s Transportation Plan and served to reduce traffic congestion on US95 and provide a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists accessing school properties. The City acquired right-of-way for the complete streets corridor, which required the utility infrastructure to be completed within a specific timeline. The sewer, water, and power utilities were designed to accommodate the construction of the roadway, bicycle lane, and pedestrian facilities with a phased approach that provided flexibility for the City while meeting the necessary project timelines. Century West also performed construction management services.

Deschutes County, Powell Butte Highway/Butler Market Intersection Improvements

Century West was selected to manage and design a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Powell Butte Highway and Butler Market Road adjacent to the Bend Municipal Airport. Century West developed several concept alignments for Deschutes County review that included potential future connectivity to the airport. Services included geometric roadway design, signing/striping and lighting, stormwater analysis and design per the Central Oregon Stormwater Manual, right-of-way acquisition, and utility relocation. A key element of the design was construction phasing and staging as Powell Butte Highway needed to remain open during construction. Century West worked closely with a valued contractor teaming partner to assist in developing a practical plan that was easily implemented and highly functional.

City of Roseburg, Stewart Parkway Improvements

Century West provided engineering and full construction management services for roadway, stormwater quality, and quantity facility improvements associated with this roadway realignment project in Roseburg. The $4.87M project was constructed to provide four travel lanes south through a realigned S-curve and new sidewalk and bike lanes throughout the project limits. The road was closed for three months, which was instrumental in keeping the project under budget and ahead of schedule. This complex project involved multiple street sections, widening a bridge over Newton Creek, retaining walls, a new stormwater conveyance system, water quality facilities, reconstruction of signalized intersections, right-of-way acquisition, and wetland mitigation.
