What was it about Century West Engineering that drew you to the company?
I randomly responded to a craigslist ad that mentioned the work we do on airports, with very low expectations since it was probably a scam. I was still in school and this was the first job I applied for. I got a phone call about a week later from one of our planners, Samantha, and we talked for at least an hour. I was late for my next class but she was so excited talking about the work she was doing that I didn’t want to stop her. I enjoyed talking to her so much and that conversation really got me excited about graduating and moving on to the next step.
What has kept you at Century West?
I love working here because I get to participate in every aspect of delivering a quality finished product to our clients. Working for a small company means that everyone wears a lot of hats, from design to construction inspection.
What are your interests outside of work?
We are big campers (ok, it’s really more like glamping) We love exploring the PNW and going clamming, finding the best lakes for kayaking and paddle boarding, or just finding the best side-of-the-road ice cream in every small town we come across!
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
You learn the most from situations you like the least.
What kind of projects have you worked on during your career as a civil engineer?
I work mostly on aviation projects.
Can you give an example of a project you worked on at Century West Engineering that you are particularly proud of?
The first project that I was able to participate in from the beginning all the way through construction was a lighting replacement project at Bremerton National Airport. Getting to see a project all the way through construction is a huge learning opportunity and really rewarding to see it finished. I still do site visits at this airport pretty regularly and every time those lights come on I have to stop and just admire how good they look!
What would you want engineers looking for a job to know about Century West?
Engineering is my second career, and this is truly the first company I’ve ever worked for that lists work/life balance as a benefit and lives up to that expectation. It is deeply ingrained in the company culture and modeled by senior leadership. As a parent, I’ve never missed a kid’s sporting event or school play because I had to work instead.
