Project

Century West provided design and construction management services for a new, 6-foot-wide wood timber pedestrian staircase. The staircase provided a route for pedestrians and cyclists from Highway 101 down to Agate Beach State Park below. The staircase is 125 feet in length and approximately 50 feet in elevation, from top to bottom. A unique aspect of the staircase was a bike trough on one side to allow cyclists the ability to transport their bikes along the staircase. The on-grade timber stairs and wooden bike trough were designed to Uniform Building Code safety standards for railing height, stair treads, and lengths. Due to the severe slope of the hillside and right-of way constraints posed by an existing drainage structure, our team developed several profiles, alignments, and grading schemes prior to final design. Close communication was maintained with the contractor during construction to ensure the design and grading schemes were followed and that the correct materials were used. The project also included drainage and guardrail modifications to accommodate the staircase.
